Summer Reading

Every year the East Hampton Public Library sponsors a fun and educational summer reading program designed to work with our local schools required summer reading.  Summer reading is designed to help keep your child’s mind active and engaged preventing summer learning loss.  Join us and have fun while we learn together.

How it works!

Sign up in the children’s room starting June 21st and receive a Planet Passport!

Set a weekly reading goal with your child.  You can choose whether to read a certain number of books or read for a certain number of minutes per week.

Each week, read to meet your goal!  Children can read independently or can be read to.  It all counts!

Once your child has met their weekly goal, visit the library for a planet sticker and raffle tickets to win great prizes!  By the end of summer you’ll collect all 8 planet stickers and travel the universe!  Can’t get here one week?  That’s okay!  We’ll still count it!

Winning raffle tickets will be pulled on Tuesday, August 20 at our End of Summer Reading Celebration Magic Show!

And!  Don’t forget to visit us all summer long for great events!

Summer Reading Kick Off

Friday June 21st at 3:00pm

Join us for an interactive science show!  Destination Moon ignites children’s imagination with fun and learning as we experience space vacuum, principles of flight, spinoff technology and even astronaut training.  Highly interactive and full of fun!  To be followed by an ice cream social!  Reserve your seat here.

Paws for Reading

Wednesdays, June 26, July 17 and August 14 from 10:00 – 11:30am

Read of our furry friend Barnabus, a trained therapy dog.  Great for boosting beginning reader’s confidence.  Call us to reserve your 15 minute slot.  860.267.6621

Celestial Creatures

Wednesday, July 24 at 10:15am

Gazing into the night sky, we see many groups of bright stars called constellations.  Using their imaginations, our ancestors saw animals hidden within these star groups.  We will learn about different animal constellations, meet some the animals they were named after, and design our own constellation using inspiration from our favorite animal with the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.  Reserve your seat here.

Aliens!  Escape from Earth

Wednesday, July 31 at 10:15am

During a midnight meteor shower, something mysterious falls from the sky toward Earth — but it’s not a shooting star. Two kids venture out to investigate and soon find themselves mixed up with a family of visitors from another planet! Throughout this amazing intergalactic story, we use science experiments to bring the story to life!  Don’t miss this action-packed and educational alien adventure. It’s totally out of this world!  Reserve your seat here.

Our Universal Neighbors the Planets

Wednesday, August 7 at 10:15am

From Mercury to Mars, through hands-on activities, we will learn about Earth’s extraordinary neighbors and the unique qualities that each one possesses.  We will also get creative and make a “Rings of Saturn Whirligig’ to take home. With the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.  Reserve your seat here.

End of Summer Reading Celebration Magic Show
